Don’t Miss These GREAT Workshops
2017 is, in some ways, off to a slow start. We’ve had an unusually cold and snowy December and January. Many evening and weekend events have been canceled. Since we get freezing rain and aren’t equipped for this kind of weather, things grind to a stop — unlike in the Midwest where I grew up. This is my excuse for not having posted my own classes yet for the beginning of the year. My Tuesday night journaling classes are continuing throughout the year and I’ve had lots of time available for open studio time (come work independently on your own project, use my equipment, and leave the mess here) as well as one-on-one classes and small groups. Come on in and work!
I have been busy, however, arranging for four incredible artists to come present workshops in 2017.
All four artists are well known in their field for their particular style. These classes will all be small so there is lots of one on one time between students and instructors. You’ll be out in the country with beautiful views of the Helvetia Hills and Valleys and the Coastal Range. Make friends, learn a new skill or technique, and take home a beautiful one of a kind piece.
Here they are:

Just a note: Kory stopped by the workshop one afternoon last week. She told me about the public and private commissions she has gotten recently. Watch for her work all over the NW! Then she told me to grab a pair of nippers and a piece of glass. I’ve been making mosaics for about a dozen years but in a few minutes Kory taught me some of her techniques that I had never seen before. I can’t wait for others to learn her sliver cuts and glass shaving techniques! They’re going to make my life a lot easier!
- Susan Wechsler – Mosaic Memory Dresses, May 19-22, 2017.
During this four-day workshop you will create a memory dress using one of Susan’s dress substrates, magic putty, and your inspirations, discarded treasures, and personal palette. Create a lasting memory that tells a story of a person, event, or heritage.
- Susan Crocenzi – Spacescapes – Polymer Clay Tile Making and Tempered Glass Mosaic Techniques, Sept. 7 -8, 2017.
Learn two awesome mosaic/mixed-media techniques in one fast-paced and fun weekend. You will use tempered glass and make your own polymer clay tiles and more to create a ‘scape with a foreground, orb in the sky, and background.
THERE ARE LIMITED SEATS FOR ALL FOUR CLASSES, REGISTER NOW!

My years as a New York City costume designer taught me how to use colors, patterns and textures to tell compelling stories that evoke different times and places throughout history. What is most unique about my mosaic style is that I honor the integrity and history of each piece of china by carefully cutting and then placing the patterns back together. My true creative desire is to be inspired and inspire others through my teachings. –Susan Wechsler

Happy Thanksgiving and Here Comes Christmas…
The older I get, the fast time seems to go. I wonder why that is. There has to be an explanation for it. Of course, stores advertising for Halloween about the time school starts and for Thanksgiving before Halloween doesn’t help…
I’ve been busy with all sorts of classes and projects. My latest is creating a series of Christmas Tags. They could also be put on the front of cards instead of tags…
I pulled out all of my stamps, stencils, dies, paper and ephemera that have to deal with Christmas and I have quite a handful. The picture shows just a small amount of what I have.
Come join me for card or tag making beginning this Saturday, Nov. 29 from 5-9 pm. Cost: $15. See schedule below for other dates. You can also make cards and tags during Open Studio time (next Open Studio is Wednesday, Nov. 30, 9 to 4)OR bring the project that you’re having trouble completing and do it at the workshop where other tasks aren’t calling your name!
I also have several other classes coming up — Tuesday night journaling continues ($5), of course, but I’m also doing classes in small mosaics (picture frame or around a small mirror), collages with resin, Resin Jewelry, and a day for kids to come in and make cards and crafts for the holidays…

Completion of Mosaic Mural Workshop
The completed mural is displayed on the front of my workshop. It’s gorgeous. Even in the rain. I can’t wait to lift the tarp and see the rays of the son reflect off the mural surface. There is so much I would like to say.
Jennifer Kuhns is a wonderful teacher and team leader. She brings knowledge, passion, vision, design, and a great sense of calm to a group project. A very BIG thanks to Jennifer.
It was a great team. Humor, sharing, working hard, taking turns, stepping up to the plate. I can’t imagine a better group and would love to have them work on any project if I needed help.
The mural is truly representative of the Helvetia Farms of which Denny’s Workshop is part. The mural has the rolling hills of Helvetia, a beautiful view of the sun falling on the valley, Christmas trees, and fields of lavender. The colors of the workshop are purple and green. Without intentionally planning it, the mural came together seamlessly.
I learned a lot, am taking away tips that I will apply on future projects. But one thing impressed me more than anything else: Nothing ever goes completely the way you plan. There are always changes and adjustments along the way. When things change unexpectedly, I tend to tense up and worry, expect the worse. Why do I “expect” things to go perfectly? Why don’t I expect things to unfold as they will and then, if they go smoothly, I can be pleasantly surprised? The truth is, much of the joy of this project came through changes and surprises — running out of one tile and having to add another element, having a piece not fit right, and so on. Through unexpected circumstances, we melded as a group, learned and grew, gained real life experience and, I think, we and the mural are both better for it.
Thanks to everyone who was involved!

Day Three of Mosaic Mural Workshop
It’s been another great day. Lots of team work and learning how to be flexible and make changes when needed. We’ve finished the mural itself. Tomorrow we will take the two pieces of the mural and mount them on the exterior wall. We’ll go on to grout, clean, buff, and make other adjustments and finishing touches. Check in tomorrow to see a photo of this piece on the workshop!
Day Two of the Mosaic Mural Workshop
Why take a class at Denny’s Workshop? Not every class is like this but Day Two of the Mosaic Mural Workshop had a number of selling points:
Excellent guest teacher. Jennifer Kuhns is leading us through the process of planning, making, and completing a mosaic mural.
Fun and ambitious classmates work together.
Progress made on the mural. It is so much fun to help make the decisions about tesserae and colors and more and then see the mural begin to emerge.
Yummy food. Today, Tim’s mom sent along a plate of snickerdoodles and Denny’s mom made homemade chicken noodle soup so that we could make the most of our time together.
A studio with just about everything.
A lovely country setting with a gorgeous view and breathtaking sunset.
Can’t wait for Day Three!
First Day of Mosaic Mural Class
First day of Mosaic Mural Workshop with Jennifer Kuhns at Denny’s Workshop… We learned, we planned, we practiced. We’re going to make serious headway tomorrow. Four days from beginning to end. The mosaic goes up on the exterior wall of the workshop on Monday. Jenn may need to crack the whip. Great group of people. Best of all, we spent the afternoon in creative endeavors. No discussion of politics at all!
